The Spilhaus projection recenters the world on what covers 71% of its surface. Every continent becomes a peninsula — the ocean is the story. This is the lens through which Race Rock sees the world: science, investment, and action organized around the health and future of the sea.
Early-stage investment in the companies building the future of ocean science, marine technology, and the blue economy.
The ocean covers 71% of the Earth's surface and remains the most under-resourced frontier in science and commerce. The next generation of marine biologists, oceanographers, and ocean technologists are building companies that deserve capital and conviction — not just curiosity.
Race Rock Ventures is not a traditional fund. It is a single, committed investor with deep scientific and operational context — someone who has spent a career at the intersection of fundamental research and scaled industrial application. That background informs every investment decision.
We invest at the pre-seed and seed stage, write modest checks, and bring far more than capital. We bring a network built across 30 years at the frontier of R&D, and a genuine curiosity about what you're building.
We look forward to hearing about what you're building.
Get in Touch →At the frontier of ocean discovery — through membership, conference participation, consortium work, and small grants for meaningful research.
The Race Rock Institute is a vehicle for deep, sustained engagement with the global ocean science community. Through professional memberships, active conference participation, and targeted research grants, the Institute puts ideas, people, and resources in contact with the most exciting work happening in ocean and marine science today.
Active memberships and engagements are maintained with leading societies in oceanography, marine biology, and ocean technology. Details updated as affiliations develop.
The Institute offers small research grants in areas of focused interest, particularly for graduate students and early-career scientists. Priority areas include marine biodiversity, deep-sea ecology, ocean-climate interactions, and novel sensing technologies.
Grant inquiries are welcome. There is no formal application cycle — the best ideas arrive on their own schedule.
Inquire About Grants →Charitable giving directed toward ocean conservation, marine science, and the ecosystems and communities the sea sustains.
Race Rock Philanthropy is not a foundation with a grants committee and a formal application portal. It is charitable giving made deliberately — to organizations doing exceptional work in the ocean world, directed by curiosity and conviction rather than a checklist.
Race Rock Philanthropy operates informally and with full discretion. Organizations doing exceptional work in any of the above areas are welcome to reach out. There is no formal grant cycle, no 30-page application, and no committee. Just a conversation.
Dispatches, recommendations, and field notes from a life spent traveling — to the places where ocean science happens and the sea reveals itself.
Oceara is a boutique travel journal written from personal experiences. First hand accounts and stories intended to inspire, amuse, or educate on the amazing beauty and richness of our planet Earth.
Leadership, management, and innovation — drawn from three decades at the frontier of industrial R&D.
A career leading R&D at GE Research — one of the great industrial research centers in America — produces a particular kind of knowledge. Not theoretical. Not academic. The kind forged from leading global teams of scientists and engineers through cycles of discovery, failure, iteration, and breakthrough. From building organizations that consistently produce results. From winning and executing major government-funded research programs. From bridging the gap between fundamental discovery and commercial scale.
Over 30 years: teams scaled to 200+ people, R&D portfolios grown from $30M to $300M, more than 32 issued patents, and a track record of technology transitions that created billions of dollars in market value.
Race Rock Consulting makes that experience available to organizations that need it — in any sector, at any stage.
Companies, universities, and research institutions building or restructuring their R&D operations. Research teams looking to develop and grow their scientists and engineers. Startups with deep scientific knowledge seeking to scale their technology. Anyone looking to accelerate ideas to impact at scale.
A multi-disciplinary enterprise organized around the ocean science and marine biology communities — and the people, ideas, and organizations that make them thrive.
Race Rock LLC is a purpose-driven enterprise operating at the intersection of ocean science, leadership, and investment. It is organized into five divisions — each a distinct mode of engagement with the communities and causes that revolve around the health and future of the sea.
It is not primarily a profit-driven venture. It is a vehicle for doing interesting things seriously — investing in founders, supporting researchers, traveling with intention, giving to what matters, and offering hard-won expertise to organizations that can use it.
Race Rock LLC takes its name from the Race Rock Lighthouse — the massive granite structure rising from the waters of The Race at Fisher's Island Sound. Built between 1871 and 1878, it is one of the last great masonry offshore lighthouses in America. A monument to endurance in one of the most punishing tidal passages on the Eastern Seaboard.
The name carries personal weight. It is the lighthouse you see from the bridge. The fixed point on the horizon when everything else is moving. The right name for a venture built to last.
Whether you're a founder, a researcher, a scientist, a traveler, or someone who wants to talk about the ocean — the door is open.
