Spilhaus Projection — One Ocean
An Ocean-First Perspective

One Ocean. One Planet.

The Spilhaus projection recenters the world on what covers 71% of its surface. Every continent becomes a peninsula — the ocean is the story. This is the lens through which Race Rock sees the world: science, investment, and action organized around the health and future of the sea.

Race Rock Ventures

Ventures

Early-stage investment in the companies building the future of ocean science, marine technology, and the blue economy.

Investment Thesis

The ocean covers 71% of the Earth's surface and remains the most under-resourced frontier in science and commerce. The next generation of marine biologists, oceanographers, and ocean technologists are building companies that deserve capital and conviction — not just curiosity.

Marine Biology & Biotech
Companies developing tools, platforms, or therapies rooted in marine biology. From aquaculture innovation to ocean-derived pharmaceuticals.
Ocean Sensing & Data
Remote sensing, autonomous underwater vehicles, buoy networks, and platforms that expand our ability to observe and understand the sea.
Blue Carbon & Climate
Seagrass restoration, kelp farming, and ocean-based carbon sequestration — market-based approaches to the climate crisis that start in the water.
Fisheries & Aquaculture
Sustainable seafood systems, stock management technology, and next-generation aquaculture platforms that take pressure off wild fisheries.

Patient, Purposeful Capital

Race Rock Ventures is not a traditional fund. It is a single, committed investor with deep scientific and operational context — someone who has spent a career at the intersection of fundamental research and scaled industrial application. That background informs every investment decision.

We invest at the pre-seed and seed stage, write modest checks, and bring far more than capital. We bring a network built across 30 years at the frontier of R&D, and a genuine curiosity about what you're building.

Race Rock Institute

Institute

At the frontier of ocean discovery — through membership, conference participation, consortium work, and small grants for meaningful research.

At the Frontier of Ocean Discovery

The Race Rock Institute is a vehicle for deep, sustained engagement with the global ocean science community. Through professional memberships, active conference participation, and targeted research grants, the Institute puts ideas, people, and resources in contact with the most exciting work happening in ocean and marine science today.

Current Affiliations

Active memberships and engagements are maintained with leading societies in oceanography, marine biology, and ocean technology. Details updated as affiliations develop.

Society Memberships
Active participation in professional societies — the communities where the best science is shared, debated, and advanced.
Conference Participation
Attending and participating in major ocean science conferences and symposia, including travel to field sites and research stations around the world.
Consortium Engagement
Involvement in multi-institutional research consortia where cross-disciplinary collaboration is driving the most interesting advances in marine science.
Small Research Grants
Targeted grants to early-career researchers and graduate students working on ocean science questions of particular interest. Modest in size, meaningful in intent.

Supporting the Next Generation

The Institute offers small research grants in areas of focused interest, particularly for graduate students and early-career scientists. Priority areas include marine biodiversity, deep-sea ecology, ocean-climate interactions, and novel sensing technologies.

Grant inquiries are welcome. There is no formal application cycle — the best ideas arrive on their own schedule.

Race Rock Philanthropy

Philanthropy

Charitable giving directed toward ocean conservation, marine science, and the ecosystems and communities the sea sustains.

Giving With Intention

Race Rock Philanthropy is not a foundation with a grants committee and a formal application portal. It is charitable giving made deliberately — to organizations doing exceptional work in the ocean world, directed by curiosity and conviction rather than a checklist.

Marine Conservation
Protecting ocean ecosystems, coral reefs, and the biological diversity of the sea.
Elasmosaur Research
Supporting the science of sharks, rays, and their relatives — keystone species that have shaped ocean ecosystems for 450 million years.
Deep Sea Research
Supporting the institutions and expeditions pushing into the least-explored environments on Earth.
Climate & Ocean Health
The ocean is the planet's climate engine. Supporting the science that monitors, models, and defends it.
Coastal Communities
Supporting fishing communities, working waterfronts, and the livelihoods built on and around the ocean.
Science Education
Funding programs that bring ocean science to the next generation — in schools, aquariums, and at the water's edge.

A Note on Process

Race Rock Philanthropy operates informally and with full discretion. Organizations doing exceptional work in any of the above areas are welcome to reach out. There is no formal grant cycle, no 30-page application, and no committee. Just a conversation.

Race Rock Consulting

Consulting

Leadership, management, and innovation — drawn from three decades at the frontier of industrial R&D.

Thirty Years at the Edge of What's Possible

A career leading R&D at GE Research — one of the great industrial research centers in America — produces a particular kind of knowledge. Not theoretical. Not academic. The kind forged from leading global teams of scientists and engineers through cycles of discovery, failure, iteration, and breakthrough. From building organizations that consistently produce results. From winning and executing major government-funded research programs. From bridging the gap between fundamental discovery and commercial scale.

Over 30 years: teams scaled to 200+ people, R&D portfolios grown from $30M to $300M, more than 32 issued patents, and a track record of technology transitions that created billions of dollars in market value.

Race Rock Consulting makes that experience available to organizations that need it — in any sector, at any stage.

01
R&D Leadership & Organization Design
How to build, structure, and lead research organizations that actually produce results — from small teams to enterprise-scale R&D operations. Stage-appropriate structures, talent strategy, portfolio prioritization, and the cultural conditions for scientific creativity and accountability.
02
Innovation Process & Portfolio Management
Moving ideas from concept to deployment without killing them in the middle. Structured stage-gate frameworks, go/no-go decision discipline, portfolio balancing, and the organizational habits that separate high-performing R&D shops from those that spin in place.
03
Technical Leadership Development
Developing scientists and engineers into leaders — the hardest and most consequential talent transition in any research organization. Individual coaching, team-level leadership frameworks, and the mindset shifts that turn great individual contributors into great leaders of people and programs.
04
Research-to-Commercialization Strategy
Bridging the valley of death between discovery and deployment. Technology readiness assessment, partnership and licensing strategy, internal investment case development, and the organizational alignment required to move technology from the lab to the market.

Who This Is For

Companies, universities, and research institutions building or restructuring their R&D operations. Research teams looking to develop and grow their scientists and engineers. Startups with deep scientific knowledge seeking to scale their technology. Anyone looking to accelerate ideas to impact at scale.

Race Rock LLC

About

A multi-disciplinary enterprise organized around the ocean science and marine biology communities — and the people, ideas, and organizations that make them thrive.

Five Ways to Engage With the Ocean World

Race Rock LLC is a purpose-driven enterprise operating at the intersection of ocean science, leadership, and investment. It is organized into five divisions — each a distinct mode of engagement with the communities and causes that revolve around the health and future of the sea.

It is not primarily a profit-driven venture. It is a vehicle for doing interesting things seriously — investing in founders, supporting researchers, traveling with intention, giving to what matters, and offering hard-won expertise to organizations that can use it.

Named for a Lighthouse

Race Rock LLC takes its name from the Race Rock Lighthouse — the massive granite structure rising from the waters of The Race at Fisher's Island Sound. Built between 1871 and 1878, it is one of the last great masonry offshore lighthouses in America. A monument to endurance in one of the most punishing tidal passages on the Eastern Seaboard.

The name carries personal weight. It is the lighthouse you see from the bridge. The fixed point on the horizon when everything else is moving. The right name for a venture built to last.
